Studio Art: Drawing and Painting Techniques
& Drawing from Life
The Drawing portion of the Studio Art course is comprised of an introduction to the basic drawing techniques (line, design and "chiaroscuro") through which students will learn how to reproduce an object on paper, according to its natural shape and proportions. Students will use drawing tools such as graphite, charcoal, pen-and-ink, and pastel crayon. In the Drawing from Life sessions, students continue with an in-depth study of the skills acquired in their Basic Drawing sessions, especially the chiaroscuro technique, including the basics of shading and perspective. Some of the Life Drawing classes will take place plein-air (outside, in the open-air). The Painting portion will focus on the rudiments of the color theory and the practice of various techniques, such as tempera, pastel and watercolor painting. Students will learn how to emphasize the brightness of the colors of different objects and the effects of light on metal, glass, etc.

Art history and archaeology in situ lectures occupy our mornings. In the afternoons, Italian Passages™ participants will enroll in either language or studio art classes, depending upon their area of interest. These afternoon classes will take place during the first two weeks of the program, in Siena and Florence, respectively. The courses are limited to Italian Passages™ students.
